Vodka is one of the most popular and versatile spirits in the world. Known for its clear, pure appearance and relatively neutral taste, vodka is a staple in many cocktails and enjoyed neatly by enthusiasts. Its origins trace back to Eastern Europe, with both Russia and Poland laying claim to its invention. 

A Brief History of Vodka

Vodka’s roots trace back to the 11th century, when Persian physician Ar-Razi isolated ethanol through distillation. In Europe, alchemists—especially in Provence—used Arab-invented distillation devices to turn grape must into alcohol. The resulting volatile liquid was called spiritus vini (“spirit of the wine”) and became known as aqua vitae, or “water of life”—the ancestor of all modern spirits, including brandy, whiskey, schnapps, and vodka.

In 1386, Genoese envoys introduced aqua vitae to Moscow. By the late 15th century, vodka was being produced in Russian monasteries. Its popularity surged, and by the 18th century, Empress Catherine the Great granted production rights to Russian nobility, who elevated it to a refined and noble drink. Flavored vodkas were showcased in lavish tastings called “drinking from A to Z.” Catherine gifted Russian vodka to European monarchs and intellectuals like Voltaire, Kant, and Goethe, spreading its reputation across the continent. It soon became a drink of choice among the European elite.
