Since 1989, the BNIC (Bureau National Interprofessionnel du Cognac) has established specific regulations for the marketing of vintage cognacs. These regulations require that each cask containing vintage eaux-de-vie be sealed and listed, and that any handling be done in the presence of a sworn representative of the BNIC to ensure the authenticity of the age and origin of the cognac.
